Policy Guidelines

Special Software Installation

The guidelines for faculty requesting installation of software on the lab computers are as follows:

  • Wharton faculty and staff must contact their Wharton Computing Representative for all software installations. The Wharton Computing representative must coordinate all software installation requests with the Wharton Computing labs group. Non-Wharton faculty and staff may send email to labs@wharton.upenn.edu for software installation requests and a Wharton Computing labs group representative will contact you.

  • Security settings prohibit anyone from installing software on the lab computers, group worksations or classroom computers. This includes web browser plug-ins.

  • All requests for software installation on a lab computer must be submitted to the Wharton Computing Labs group at least two weeks prior to the scheduled class. Reservations must be confirmed before the software will be installed.

Priority will be given to working on software installs for Wharton credit courses. Requests for software installs that are not part of a Wharton credit course will be dependent upon whether or not the software is compatible with our existing applications.

  • Only software for Wharton-related credit courses will be installed on the lab computers. For non-course related requests, if the software conflicts with our existing applications it will not be installed on the computers.

  • After the software has been installed, the instructor and his or her Wharton Computing Distributed Representative must thoroughly test it before the scheduled class. The lab computing environment is more restrictive than most computers; even though a program works on other computers it may not work correctly in the labs. You must allow several days to correct any problems and re-test the program; last minute fixes may not be possible.

  • Any software loaded on the network must have a license for each user or the written permission of the owner of the software. There is no exception to this rule. Licenses cannot be temporarily "borrowed" from some other installation you may have, the license for lab use must be used exclusively in the labs.

  • Please note that there are fees involved with installing any special software except for Wharton credit courses. For details on these fees, see the section "Software Installation" on our rate sheet. Lab charges are done via the University’s twenty-six (26) digit budget code only

  • Wharton Computing does not have personnel available for Wharton non-credit course and program reservations after normal business hours.
